Climate Controlled Storage

What Does Climate Control Do?

When it comes to storage, some items need a little more protection. Stagnant air, extreme temperature changes, and humidity in a storage unit can lead to damage to some items. It’s not safe to leave things like electronics, forms of media, artwork, and other things in an uncontrolled storage space. The good news is, Your Extended Attic offers several options for those needing climate-controlled storage units. When you need extra space, we have controlled storage so your items stay protected.

In this article, we're going to answer these questions:

•  What items need to be in climate-controlled storage?
•  What can weather and changing temperatures do to my items?
•  What conditions can be expected in the Tennessee Valley area?
•  What safety precautions does Your Extended Attic offer?

What items need to be
in climate-controlled storage?

  • Antiques
  • Anything with leather or other fabrics
  • Anything with wood
  • Artwork
  • Clothing
  • Electronics
  • Furniture
  • Household items like makeup and toiletries
  • Mattresses
  • Musical instruments
  • Paper documents, books, magazines, etc.
  • Photographs
  • Vinyl Records
Some items don’t need a controlled environment to remain the same. Some, but not many, can withstand degrees in storage units that climb to over 100 degrees or temperatures falling below freezing.

But many items are affected by things like changing weather, temperatures too hot or cold, humidity, and more. Imagine your items sitting in a concrete room without any climate control. Temperatures in the summer climb over 100 degrees—not only is it nasty and sticky in your storage unit, but the heat is damaging as your items sit and fester. We want to take care of your items, so we provide climate-controlled units.

What can weather and changing temperatures do to my items?

Changing temperatures, both hot and cold, affect wood. It can warp, crack, split, and more as the temperatures rise. If you have items like furniture, musical instruments, or more, you will need climate-controlled units to keep them safe.

The same is true of things like electronics. Both cold and hot temperatures will damage the inside of your items. On top of that, living in areas with high humidity levels will them. Without controlled storage, condensation and humidity will creep its way to your items. It’s important to know what services you need when you look for storage.

What conditions can be expected
in the Tennessee Valley area?

The Southern/Middle Tennesee and North Alabama areas are famous for the changing weather from one extreme temperature to another. It may quickly go from a blazing hot October day to a freezing November day. If you’re storing your items long-term, expect and be ready for shifting conditions to alter what’s happening inside your storage unit. Some items will be okay, but others need the extra layer of protection.
